Oct 30, 2013 My desktop Mac has been running a little slow. I wasn’t sure what’s going on. I am an semi-pro photographer with lots of photos and applications for photography on my internal drive, plus two external drives. I downloaded the cleaner and ran it, and it found almost 10GB of old stuff in about 10 minutes of scanning.
When it comes to Mac, it is understood that the computers will give excellent performance. In fact, you should not be doubtful about Mac performance, as Mac machines do not hold the title of Excellence just like that. Advanced hardware components, eye-pleasing graphics, lesser startupand shutdown times, tremendous execution environment, and many other elements and features contribute greatly to make Mac machines able to achieve the title Excellent.
Apple, the manufacturer of Mac OS X based computers, released several Mac based computers, typically desktops and laptops (Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and more), back to back, in order to meet the requirements of modern users. These systems are based on highly advanced hardware components and offer tremendous performance. However, these Macs often come across slowdown or performance downfall issues due to rigorous usage over time.
MacBook Air Performance Downfall
MacBook Air is the successor in ultraportable series of notebook computers developed and Marketed by Apple Inc. These notebooks are based on highly advanced hardware configuration, including 1.3 GHz (i5-4250U) dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3 MB shared L3 Cache, 4 GB (optional 8 GB) of 1600 MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM, 128 GB or 256 GB (optional 512 GB) PCIe-based SSD with latest Mac OS X Mavericks in its latest model. Such highly advanced hardware configuration makes MacBook Air the incredible notebook series computer. However, even with such advanced system configuration, you face MacBook Air slow or performance downfall issues. In fact, the factors affecting MacBook Air performance cause it undergo performance downfall very badly.
MacBook Pro Performance Downfall
Since the Mac OS X based computers perform out of this world, it does not mean they do not get the crown of Excellence fall down no matter what. In other words, no matter which Mac computer you own, even if running on Mavericks (Mac OS X 10.9), it may get its performance affected adversely at the end of the day. Apple released MacBook Pro, the line of portable computers, in its latest stable version on October 22, 2013 with Retina Display. Its advanced hardware configuration includes 2.5 GHz (T9300) Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn with 6 MB on-chip L2 Cache, 4 GB (two 2 GB) of RAM (expandable up to 8 GB), 250 GB Serial ATA 5400 RPM (optional 320 GB 7200 RPM) and MacBook Pro is available in two (13-inch and 15-inch) models.
Even though such advanced system configuration is great and gives incredible performance, you still find your MacBook Pro slow or performing sluggishly after a long time or rigorous usage. Well, this is not the permanent slowdown or performance downfall. You can bring your MacBook performance back to line by putting certain tips into practice.
Tips to Speed up Mac based Computers
When your MacBook Air faces performance downfall, sluggishness, and similar issues, it is obvious for you to recall those old days when it happened to have excellent performance. Subsequently, you wonder if you could take your Mac performance to that incredible level again. Well, you can actually and significantly speed up MacBook Pro and achieve that dream-of performance level again in the following manner:
Manage Startup Items
While booting to desktop, Mac OS X loads several unnecessary items that eat up system resources greatly. Consequently, your Mac takes longer time to boot. The number of startup items actually relies on the number of applications installed on your Mac. For example, Google Chrome, Safari, and other browsers have different plug-ins installed, which require extra resources for execution. In other words, larger the number of startup items, longer is the booting time.
Mac OS X enables you manage these startup items manually with putting much efforts. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and select your user account. Select the unwanted items and click the minus (-) button to disable them.
Run Latest Edition of OS X
Apple takes care of its products well and releases applications and security updates over time to add up new features to existing ones and enhance the security. To achieve highest performance, upgrade to the latest stable release of Mac OS X and installed applications. Before that, make sure you check and compare its features from the one you own. To check for updates, click the Apple icon in the upper right corner of your Mac and choose About this Mac in the list.
Updating to the latest version of Mac OS X not only boots your Mac performance, but it also fixes many flaws and enhances the immunity of the system.
Clean Up Mac Hard Drive
Mac Hard drive cleanup is likely the best and easiest step aiming at freeing up the drive space considerably. You simply go through the hard drive, in each of its volumes individually, and either remove or move out the unwanted item to an external storage media. This should bring down the storage level on your Mac to below 90 percent (at least) to meet the ideal storage level. In other words, your Mac drive or each of its volumes must have at least 10 percent of their total capacity as free space.
You can use a professional disk cleanup tool and scan your Mac for cache, junk files, universal binaries, large files, and more. Subsequently, filter the scanned result as per your preferences and erase all unwanted items carefully.
Apart from the aforementioned tips to speed up Mac, you may upgrade the hardware components to speed up MacBook Air and experience incredible performance. However, make sure you buy only authorized hardware components.
